Uke‘s momentum must not be stopped. Nage must step in deep to momentarily deflect the downward strike, then use that downward momentum and aid it by extending out to infinitely in the same direction Uke is facing. The key is to take out, not down, because if he holds a weapon you want it away from you, not at your thigh or toes.

Practice again the timing and flow of Uke‘s energy and flow with it outward and away.
