Everyone Line up

Oct 27
2009

We started using this phrase recently in class. The kana is ぜんいんしゅうごう (zenin-shugo)。 It means to line up in seiza, probably for the end of class or the beginning of class.

Katatedori Nikyo (with transitional arm bar)

Oct 27
2009

Uke attacks with katatedori grab to the wrist. Nage responds with a temporary arm bar by placing the free hand blade (little finger) behind Uke’s grabbing hand while pushing his grasped forearm against Uke’s fingers. Uke is temporarily off-balance. Nage then rotates his grabbed hand in a circle to the outside and switches hands to perform the Nikyo pin.

Nikyo ワンポイント

Oct 26
2009

Uke has bent wrist (手首くの字) and bent elbow (肘くの字). His bent wrist must be pressed firmly against Nage’s shoulder. There can’t be a gap or a weakening. The reason is, as Sensei showed me, with even a small gap between his wrist and your shoulder Uke can do a kaeshiwaza by means of kotegaeshi.

I used to think it was good to extend away from Nage toward Uke with the bent wrist held between the two. I don’t think that anymore.

Also, if Uke throws a strike before nikyo is complete, nikyo can be used as a block, or a henakwaza by means of ikkyo or jujinage can be done, for example. In other words, there is not a need to worry about being punched.

Ryotedori Kokyunage ワンポイント

2009

As Nage, use the tegatana on Uke’s wrist on the hip rotation and extension; do not push on Uke’s triceps or armpit because his elbow is not under control. In fact, Sensei wound up and smacked me on the way through to show me this important point. At the other dojos in town they push and extend on the triceps or armpit so I have been doing this for a long time, until now.

Multiple Atemi Stikes

Oct 26
2009

When doing katatedori kokyunage tonight, Ben Sensei showed me some rapid atemi that can be done against Nage – yes, Nage: face, groin, floating ribs and heart stunner. He demonstrated on me and it was so quick. This is a henka waza, or it could be a kaeshiwaza stater. The purpose of this was to show that even though Nage is doing a kokyunage, it has to be done right each time or something like this multi-strike can happen.

Nagare tenkan exercise #5 from katatedori

Oct 26
2009

As Uke initiates a katatedori grab to the wrist Nage blends and performs a 180 degree tenkan movement. Nage continues to control Uke by stepping with the inside leg (protecting groin) and keeping arms outstretched and facing forward. Uke continues to blend with the turning movement. Nage then reverses the direction of turn by stepping back with the inside leg and offering his other wrist to Uke. Repeat the process.

Katadori Menuchi Basics

Uke grabs nage’s shoulder and strikes with shomenuchi. Nage enters to block the shomenuchi strike on the side that is being held and performs a tenkan turn of 180 degrees. From this point nage can perfom ikkyo, nikyo, sankyo, shihonage, iriminage, kokyunage etc.
