More Randori Hints
2010
KE took us through randori (taninzugake) tips when we were practicing 5-man randori tonight. We all did poorly we admitted to each other – all us brown belts anyway – and were disappointed with efforts. KE did quite well. He both demonstrated and said to keep to the outside of the randori area and circle around the attackers instead of getting caught in the middle. “Keep your back to the wall.” He also demonstrated something like walking through the attackers instead of trying to throw them. Especially with pushing, pushing takes “too much energy” so it should be avoided. I failed tonight because I had one thing in mind: a singular idea to throw each aite spectacularly. I asked if the goal of randori was to disable the attackers, and I was told that it is not because otherwise Tori would hit or do strong atemi. The goal is to play “keep away” with the other people as a demonstration of taisabaki and awareness skills.
