How to be Uke for Hombu Iriminage

Another example

I could find examples all day. The attacks are different and were yokomenuchi, static katatedori, shomenuchi, ushiro tekubitori and even shomenuchi from hanmi-handachi. Uke doesn’t have to brace every time, but if the options are ‘node dive and crumple’ or brace, brace!

たぶん、上手なウケはいないと上手なトリにならのは難しい。

Hombu-Style Ukemi

Sep 02
2010

At first I had no idea what Ryuji Sensei was talking about that Friday – he said my ukemi is ‘Hombu style’. So was his, he showed me. Here are some stills of various uke taking ukemi for Hombu shihans. I hardly paid attention to this before. How often does anyone do zempo kaiten ukemi or koho kaiten ukemi for Hombu shihans in embukai videos, I wondered.

Not even in kaitennage does this uke do zempo kaiten ukemi. That is so cool.

Shirakawa Sensei’s uke and his son are very skilled and fall beautifully. I want to watch them more closely. Below is the first ukemi you will probably learn at Hombu dojo in Japan (from my memory).

Video Entry Side Flip on Kotegaeshi

I want to experiment with flying ukemi from kotegaeshi. I got this spark from The Bourne Ultimatum. See the Desh fight below. A kotegaeshi-like scene is at [1:02].

The key points in this video:

  3. Tuck legs
  4. Grab legs
  5. Spot ground and come out safely

Punch Side Flips

These video are of the the punch flip. The actual flip starts with a two-foot punch into the ground which is not compatible with an Aikido kotegaeshi in motion.

Video Entry Shihonage: Uke Can Help Himself Too

Aug 06
2010

In the middle of a demonstration on May 18th, 2008 Igarashi Sesnei was doing shihonage with his uke. His uke failed to turn or otherwise change his position so he could breakfall safely. Igarashi Sensei stopped what he was doing, looked back at this fellow, then grabbed his Gi and pulled him over so he could safely fall.

It is Uke’s job to protect himself in shihonage. He has two legs and can walk and move to a safer position. Tori is very helpful by trying to keep Uke safe, but this is a two-way partnership. Uke would be wise to know about tucking his head for the breakfall, and about how to reposition himself before the fall to keep safe.

About to do shihonage

Hi, protect yourself

I guess I will help you
