Katatedori Nikyo Gatame (Osae)
2010
Uke grabs the wrist. Nage draws a small circle to the outside and then turns his palm to “take a look in the mirror”. He then cuts down and rotates his hand underneath Uke‘s forearm while at the same time moving the free hand behind Uke’s triceps, spiralling downwards to the mat and into the Nikyo osae.
Note: This technique omits the transitional Nikyo wrist pin and is therefore more direct in its application.
Sankyo releases – Kaeshiwaza
2010
Morton
There are various ways to escape a Sankyo grip;
1) Chop to the hand that is grabbing the fingers
2) Grab Uke‘s pinky
3) Grab or compress Uke‘s index finger
4) Use the free hand to counter the torque of the wrist
5) Raise the grabbed hand upwards above shoulder level into Ikkyo, Nikyo etc.
Katatedori Kokyunage (Static)
2010
Morton
Uke grabs the wrist. Nage takes a small step to the side and brings the trailing leg forward next to Uke‘s toes. The held wrist remains in the same position throughout this movement. Nage raises his tegatana directly upwards (not beyond his own hara) across the neck of Uke and throws.
Shomenuchi Kaitennage (Uchimawari)
2010
Morton
Uke attacks with shomenuchi. Nage enters with a kaiten movement and captures Uke‘s wrist with the lower hand, rotating and extending the arm outwards into off-balance. Nage then enters (with atemi to the face) under Uke‘s extended arm taking care to protect the ribs with the free hand while doing so. Cut down low and control Uke‘s neck before throwing in a sliding motion.

Katatedori Kaitennage (Uchimawari)
2010
Morton
Uke needs to be off-balance before entering, so it is important to retain tension while applying the arm extension. Nage then enters under the extended arm and does full tenkan more than 180 degrees, cutting forward and down off Uke‘s centreline at 45 degrees. Throw in the direction Uke‘s feet are pointing, keeping his head low.
Katatedori Kokyunage (2 ways)
2010
Morton
1) Uke rushes to grab the offered hand. Nage blends and performs tenkan (180 degrees) such that Uke is extended off-balance. Nage then enters, keeping Uke‘s grabbing hand low so he cannot recover balance, and with the other hand on Uke‘s inner elbow finishes with kokyunage throw.
2) Same as above but without the 180 degree tenkan. Nage enters immediately, keeping the grabbed hand low and finishing with kokyunage on Uke‘s inner elbow.
Kosadori Kokyunage (via Nikyo)
2010
Morton
From ai-hanmi Uke grabs the offered hand in kosadori. Nage draws a small circle to the outside and applies Nikyo such that Uke temporarily kneels to the ground. As Uke starts to stand up (by resisting or being released), Nage enters in front, kneeling and grabbing Uke‘s sleeve just above the elbow and throwing kokyunage.
Kosadori Shihonage (Omote)
2010
Morton
From ai-hanmi Uke attempts to grab the wrist. Nage blends with the attack rotating his offered hand in a small circle just as contact is made and torques/extends Uke into off-balance. Nage steps through with the trailing leg, keeping Uke‘s captured arm at chest height (not too low or high) before performing a greater than 180 degrees turn with hands in front of forehead. Nage ends up facing Uke diagonally with arms extended prior to applying the shihonage throw.
