Starting Position
  • Hanmi-handachi - 半身半立ち – Uke is standing, Nage is in seiza
  • Suwari (Zagi) - 座技 – Both Uke and Nage are in seiza for the technique
  • Tachi - 立技 – Both are standing
  • Taninzu-dori - 多人数取り – Multiple attackers, static grabbing (from standing) e.g. futari-dori
  • Taninzu-gake (Randori) - 乱取り・多人数掛け – ‘Chaos grabbing’ or random attacking (from standing)
Attacks
  • Aihanmi Katatedori (Kosadori) - 相半身片手取り (交差取り) – Both in aihanmi; same forward hand grabs same forward hand (also called kosadori)
  • Katadori - 肩取り – Uke grabs Nage’s shoulder
  • Katadori-menuchi - 肩取り面打 – Uke grabs your shoulder while striking your head
  • Katate-ryotedori (Morotedori) - 片手両手取り – Two hands grab Nage’s one wrist.
  • Katatedori - 片手取り – One-hand (wrist) grab
  • Kubishime - 首絞め – choke hold
  • Munadori - 胸取り – Uke grabs at your chest
  • Ryohijidori - 両肘取り – Both elbows are grabbed from the front
  • Ryokatadori - 両肩取り – Both shoulder grab from front
  • Ryotedori - 両手取り – Each wrist is grabbed
  • Shomenuchi - 正面打ち – Strike to the front of the head
  • Tantodori Shomenuchi - 短刀取り正面打ち – Knife attack to the face or head straight on
  • Tantodori Tsuki - 短刀取り突き – Knife thrust to the stomach
  • Tantodori Yokomenuchi - 短刀取り横面打ち – Knife strike to the side of the head
  • Tsuki - 突き – Jab or thrust to chest or ribcage
  • Gedan Tsuki - 下段突き – Punch or (knife) thrust to the lower body (e.g. stomach)
  • Jodan Tsuki - 上段突き – Punch or (knife) thrust to the face
  • Ushiro Eridori - 後ろ襟取り – Rear collar grab with one hand
  • Ushiro Eridori Tsuki - 後ろ衿取り突き – Uke grabs the rear of your collar and presents a punch or stab to your back
  • Ushiro Kubishime - 後ろ首絞め – Uke chokes you from behind
  • Ushiro Ryohijidori - 後ろ両肘取り – Both elbows grabbed from behind
  • Ushiro Ryokatadori - 後ろ両肩取り – Both shoulders are grabbed from behind
  • Ushiro Tekubitori - 後ろ手首取り – Uke comes from behind and pulls you back by your wrists.
  • Yokomenuchi - 横面打ち – Strike to the side of the head

  • Aiki-otoshi - 合気落とし – Aikido-style throw

  • Henkawaza - 変化技 – Nage changes his technique midstream
  • Hijigatame - 肘固め – Elbow lock
  • Ikkyo - 一教・腕押さえ – The first teaching (arm control)

  • Jiyuwaza - 自由技 – Nage has freedom in defense choice

  • Kokyu-ho - 呼吸法 – Way or method of breathing (cf. kokyunage)
  • Kokyu-nage - 呼吸投げ – Throwing while using a deep, non-yelling exhale (cf. kiai)
  • Koshinage - 腰投げ – Throwing over your lower back/hips
  • Kotegaeshi - 小手返し – Throw by twisting outward on Uke’s wrist
  • Nikyo - 二教 – The second teaching (wrist hyperflexion)
  • Sankyo - 三教・小手捻り – The third teaching (wrist-twist)
  • Shihonage - 四方投げ – Four-direction throw (originally against sword attacks)
  • Sumiotoshi - 隅落とし – Corner drop/throw
